RCREEE joins Kitchener follow up meeting with H.E. Minister of Local Development in Egypt
Ministry reviews KDDP’s solid waste management investment plan of 79 million euros
October 17, 2021- Cairo, Egypt: Major General Mahmoud Shaarawy, Minister of Local Development in Egypt held a videoconference meeting with Dr. Ayman Mokhtar, Governor of Dakahlia, Dr. Tarek Rahmy, Governor of Gharbia, and Major General Gamal Nour El-Din, Governor of Kafr El-Sheikh, in the presence a number of ministry experts and Kitchener Drainage Depollution Project (KDDP)-Solid Waste’s consultant team.
Funded by the EU and EBRD, Kitchener Drainage Depollution Project (KDDP)-Solid Waste is the first of its kind in Egypt. The project activities target the depollution one of most polluted drains in Egypt: “Kitchener”. It extends 69 Km and passes through three governorates (Kafr El Sheikh, Gharbeya and Dakahleya ) and discharges into the Mediterranean Sea.
During the meeting, H.E. reviewed KPPD’s proposed investment for solid waste management of the Kitchener Drain in Egypt, which falls under Ministry of Local Development mandates. Up to 79 million euros will allocated to manage an integrated system throughout the project life-span serving more than the 182 villages and its habitants.
The importance of this projects results from the great health & environmental improvement it offers to the people living in the drain catchment area. Besides, the project offers great socio-economic benefits in addition to enhancement of the irrigation water quality in the three governorates.
Minister Shaarawy praised the preparatory efforts made by the governors during the last period in coordination with the technical teams in the ministry and the consultants for the project, pointing to the ministry’s interest in overcoming all challenges and obstacles to expedite the implementation of the project and its completion in the specified time and overcoming all obstacles related to the procedures necessary for the success of the project.
Notably, RCREEE, Liban Consult AGM and Projacs consortium is leading the consultancy services for the implementation and construction of solid-waste component of KDDP.
The meeting witnessed a presentation of the solid waste management system current status in the three targeted governorates. The project’s main milestones include establishing factories for recycling and treating waste, closing random dumps and raising the efficiency of the waste collection and transportation system, in coordination with a KDDP technical team.
In his closing remarks, Minster Shaarawy insisted upon the importance of constantly reviewing the projects achievements and its compatibility with the new waste system, which the Ministry is closely following up regarding factories, safe sanitary landfills. and intermediate and mobile stations.
