Virtual Launch of the Study "Innovative Energy Efficiency Instruments for the MENA region"

Countries in the MENA Region are dependent on fossil fuels and economies are still characterized by high energy intensity. Over the last few years, the energy markets in this region have opened up for private-sector involvement and existing energy subsidies have been reduced, resulting in increasing costs for consumers and the industry. It is expected that population and economic growth will further increase energy demand in the longer term. Reducing energy consumption is becoming more and more economically attractive and necessary and has big potential to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Energy Efficiency Instruments could even become an important cornerstone for countries’ COVID-19 economic recovery plans as untargeted energy subsidies continue to consume significant resources that are urgently needed elsewhere.

To tackle this matter, we are inviting you to join our virtual launch of “Innovative Energy Efficiency Instruments for the MENA region” study on June 8, 2020 at 13:30-15:00 (Cairo/Berlin Local Time).

The study was commissioned by the GIZ-Project “Policy dialogue and knowledge management on low emissions development strategies in the MENA region” on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety. It aims to assess innovative Energy Efficiency Instruments that are implemented worldwide and that could be suitable for countries and help to achieve their targets and create market opportunities for private-sector actors according to the conditions of the MENA countries.

The launching webinar will display some findings from the study that will be published soon. Besides, it will highlight the regional updates and challenges building on RCREEE’s expertise.

During the webinar, representatives from the League of Arab States’ Energy Department, the Regional Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE), the Etihad ESCO and Econoler will discuss the importance of EE market based on innovative financing measures.

The launching event welcomes a panel of distinguished speakers:

  • Anita Richter, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH
  • Nouri Alkishriwi, Energy Department of the League of Arab States
  • Kawther Lihidheb, Econoler
  • Pradeep Singh, Etihad ESCO
