RCREEE Participates in the Arab Launch of the Decade of Sustainable Energy for All Initiative
On Monday, 23 March 2015, RCREEE participated in the Arab launch of the United Nations Decade of Sustainable Energy for All (2014-2024), in Amman, Jordan.
Launching the SE4ALL initiative in the Arab Region is an important milestone, as the region is expected to play an active role in the initiative. Also, this will help in shedding the light on the energy issues for sustainable development in the Arab countries.
The initiative, as declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012, will bring together stakeholders from Government, private sector and civil society to mobilize actions towards three objectives: 1) to provide universal energy access; 2) to double the rate of global energy efficiency improvement; and 3) to double the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix.
Dr. Tareq Emtairah, Executive Director of RCREEE participated in the high-level ministerial panel, following the launch of the Decade. The panel also included Mr. Omar Kettana, Minister for Energy, Palestinian Authority; Eng. Essa Bin Hilal Al-Kuwari, President of the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (KAHRAMAA); Mr. Kamel Ben Naceur, former Minister of Industry, Energy and Mines in Tunisia; Eng. Jamila Youssef Matar, Plenipotentiary Minister, Director of Energy Department, League of Arab States (LAS); and Mrs. Houda Allal, General Director of the Observatoire Mediterranean Energy (OME). The panel was moderated by Mrs. Roula Majdalani, Director of Sustainable Development and Productivity Division (SDPD), United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UN-ESCWA).
“With the release of the second edition of Arab Future Energy Index (AFEX 2015), today we have a tool to facilitate periodic reporting on the progress made in the region with regard to the three objectives of the SE4All in the Arab region” said Dr. Emtairah, Executive Director, RCREEE
The launch took place under the auspices of Dr. Ibrahim Seif, Jordanian Minister of Energy and Mines Resources. The launch was also attended by Mr. Abdalla Al-Dardari, Deputy Executive Secretary of the UN-ESCWA, and Minoru Takada, New York Representative and Director at the SE4All.
