Harmonizing MEPS in Arab Countries

The Energy Department of the League of Arab States and RCREEE Launch Strategic Initiative to Promote and Harmonizing MEPS in Arab Countries

In October 2024, the Energy Department at the League of Arab States and the Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE) launched an important initiative aimed at promoting and harmonizing Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for appliances and electrical equipment across Arab countries. This initiative addresses key regional challenges, including the absence of MEPS in some countries and inconsistent standards in others, limited institutional capacities, lack of mutual recognition of certification and testing protocols, and low consumer awareness, which currently hinder the widespread adoption of energy-efficient technologies across the region.

By promoting and harmonizing MEPS, the initiative seeks to unlock significant energy savings, reduce carbon emissions, and drive sustainable economic growth through the development of a regional market for high-efficiency appliances. It also aims to support countries that have yet to adopt MEPS by facilitating the implementation of harmonized standards. This comprehensive approach will reduce dependence on fossil fuels, lower energy costs for households and governments, stimulate industrial innovation, create green jobs, and remove technical barriers to regional trade.

This initiative represents a platform to harness regional cooperation in building a resilient and sustainable energy future. It invites stakeholders to join forces in supporting the deployment of strong energy efficiency policies, accelerating the region’s transition to a low-carbon economy, enhancing energy security, and reinforcing the Arab region’s commitment to global climate goals.
