Mauritania mainly relies on fossil fuels to meet domestic energy demand. Fossil fuels account for about 66% of primary energy consumption, while the remaining 34% comes from biomass, which is mostly used for heating and domestic needs. Electricity is mainly generated from thermal power plants composed of diesel generators. Currently, national energy consumption exceeds production by 35%, making significant imports of fossil fuels necessary. This is mainly due to the significant increase in energy needs coupled with insufficient installed capacity.
The country seeks to meet the growing energy demand while reducing imports by integrating renewable energy as a major source of electricity. The government aims to generate 15% and 20% of primary energy consumption through renewable energy sources, excluding biomass, by 2015 and 2020 respectively.
Mauritania has been a member state of RCREEE since 2014.
