Yemen assumes presidency of RCREEE Board of Trustees for 2021

3 April 2021- Cairo, Egypt: Yemen assumed the presidency of the Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE) Board of Trustees (BoT) during its 19th meeting held on 3-4 April 2021 in Cairo, Egypt.

Dr. Mohamed Alshaabi, Director of Renewable Energy was named the BoT chairperson succeeding Dr. Younis Ali, General Director Deputy of the National Energy Research Center (NERC), Syria.

Dr. Maged Mahmoud, Acting Executive Director, thanked Dr. Younis for his outstanding support, leadership and efforts over the last two years and looks forward to working under the new leadership of Yemen.

RCREEE also bided farewell to its Executive Committee public sector representatives, Mr. Qahtan Hassan, Chief of Engineering Services, Electricity Transmission Directorate of Bahrain and Mr. Abdelhamid Khalafallah, Director of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mines of Tunisia.

RCREEE extended its appreciation to Mr. Qahtan and Mr. Abdelhamid for their support and remarkable inputs that contributed much to achieving RCREEE’s mission and enriching Arab cooperation in sustainable energy fields.

Dr. Maged Mahmoud, Acting Executive Director expressed his appreciation of RCREEE team and thanked them for their continuous efforts despite 2020 challenges. The team managed to work on more than 36 projects despite the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to regional projects, RCREEE team directly served 10 Arab countries (Jordan, Tunisia, Djibouti, Syria, Somalia, Palestine, Egypt, Lebanon, Libya and Yemen).

The projects and activities provided diversified to include national action plans, market assessments, financing services, energy efficiency management in industry and buildings, capacity development, certifications and standardizations, environmental studies, economic and social studies, job creation and empowerment of women. RCREEE also provided its member states with four financing platforms and a specialized business and financing package to Mediterranean countries through EU-funded meetMED project. All of this and more in hopes of creating new partnerships, and paving the way to green recovery of RCREEE member states, especially those affected by the current crises, and to open the door to Arab African partnerships, promising investment opportunities, as well as strengthening cooperation in the field of green hydrogen.

About RCREEE Board of Trustees:

RCREEE is governed by a Board of Trustees (BoT) which is responsible for setting the center’s strategic direction, annual work plans, and evaluating financial performance. The Board consists of governmental representatives from RCREEE member states (17).

The BoT Presidency is transferred alternately every year among RCREEE member states according to their Arabic alphabetical order.
