Solar Heating Arab Mark and Certification Initiative (SHAMCI)
RCREEE takes the initiative of establishing a quality certification scheme for the production of solar thermal products and services in the Arab region. The aim is to leverage many opportunities on a regional scale for achieving production economies of scale, facilitating trade barriers, streamlining compliance monitoring, creating jobs, and promoting industrial quality standards compliance. The standardization and certification program is developed by RCREEE and the Arabian Industrial Development and Mining Organization (AIDMO) based on the Arab Ministerial Council of Electricity (AMEC) delegation.
RCREEE analyzes regional needs, invites international and regional field experts, and communicates with different stakeholders including policy makers, industrial sector, and end-consumers to bring the idea to life. The center also conducts various workshops and capacity development activities, develops project documentations, and publishes communication and awareness tools. A world-class certification network of stakeholders is established to grow and monitor the initiative. SHAMCI is now endorsed by AMEC, and a few Arab countries have shown interests to implement it on a national level.
Key Results
-
Providing a base for promoting regional compliance having 3 countries indicated interests in implementing the scheme (Tunis, Egypt, and Jordan)
-
Improving and expanding SWH markets through offering better quality standards and consumer confidence
-
Integrating national SWH markets in the regional market via adopting common standards
About Solar Water Heating Systems
Solar Water Heating (SWH) systems are a simple and cost-effective renewable energy technology that is widely used for water heating for domestic and industrial use. SWHs systems are great means to governments seeking less dependency on gas and electricity in heating water. Also, SWHs can reduce pressure on the national power system as they decrease energy consumption in the residential sector, as one of the most energy consuming sectors in the Arab region.
