RCREEE supports The Third Arab Forum for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency

After successfully holding the forum in 2012 and 2014, The League of Arab States (LAS) in cooperation with the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA),the Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE), The EU-funded project Energy Efficiency in the Construction Sector in the Mediterranean (MED-ENEC), the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy- Egypt, The German Development Cooperation (GIZ),  Egyptera and the Arab Electricity Regulators jointly organized the 3rd  Arab Forum for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency. The 3rd Arab Forum for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency” was held on 1 -2 June 2016 at Intercontinental city stars.

This year’s forum addressed the current challenges towards future energy market transformation and transition in the Arab region. It also discussed the future role and impact of RE&EE development at economic, environmental and social levels. Additionally, the forum highlighted the current most recognized positions and strategies towards the integration of RE&EE in the future Arab Energy mix.

RCREEE Executive Director, Ahmed Badr welcomed the participants in the opening session. In addition, RCREEE Executive Committee member, Mr. Hassan Aly Amin was among the panelists in the Ministers and Business Leaders Dialogue session. The session provided a platform of discussion for senior energy policy makers and business leaders on the the mutual requirements between policies and markets.

Furthermore, RCREEE hosted a panel session entitled “Financing and De-Risking of Renewable Energy Investment in the Pan-Arab Region”. The session aimed to challenge the risks facing renewable energy projects in the Pan-Arab region.

During the session, H.E. Mohamed Salem Weld El-Bashir, Mauritanian Minister of Petroleum, Energy and Mines presented the energy situation in Mauritania and its latest updates.

Moreover, on the 31st of May and a head of the forum a side event was be organized by GIZ and RE-ACTIVATE. The workshop was entitled "The Socio-Economic Benefits of Sustainable Energy: Opportunities, Approaches and Instruments for Local Value and Employment Promotion through Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency in the Middle East and North Africa”.

This workshop was a part of the GIZ/ RE-ACTIVATE promoting employment through renewable energy and energy efficiency (RE/EE) in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).

The event aimed to present the existing and future RE/EE market potentials and value based employment effects in the MENA region. It also highlighted and discussed the available policies and instruments necessary to enhance the economic welfare through RE/EE in the MENA region. Additionally, the event also aimed to illustrate and share experience on how business could contribute to building up local RE/EE value chain and accordingly create jobs.
