Algeria is a member of OPEC and an important hydrocarbon producer in the region as well as exporter of natural gas to Europe. Algeria’s economy is heavily dependent on its fossil fuel sector, whose revenues account for about 30% of the country’s gross domestic product. Natural gas and oil account for almost all of Algeria’s total primary energy consumption, and so far only 3.39% of installed energy capacity is from renewable energy resources; hydro and solar. The government is aiming to diversify the energy mix and aims to bring the share of electricity generation from renewable energy resources to 27% by 2030. Algeria aims to reduce its energy consumption by 5% by 2020 and 20% by 2030.
