RCREEE celebrates the graduation of the fifth round of the Arab Program for Sustainable Energy Youth

24 November 2015 – The Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE) celebrated the graduation of the fifth round of the Arab Program for Sustainable Energy Youth (APSEY). APSEY is a regional internship program in the fields of renewable energy and energy efficiency and it is considered one of its kind in the Arab region. Since its launching in 2012, the program targeted young professionals and post graduate students of engineering, economy, and law fields from the Arab region. The program aims to boost technical and operational capacities of the region’s young talents interested in renewable energy and energy efficiency fields. The training program is the product of cooperation and support from development partners such as the German, Danish and Egyptian governments. In addition, the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) has contributed to the APSEY success through co-sponsoring interns from its beneficiary countries since 2014.

The event started with a discussion panel moderated by RCREEE executive director, Ahmed Badr. The discussion included a number of speakers who shared their views on major global and regional developments in the sustainable energy sectors.

H.E. Dr. Mohamed Shaker, Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy and chairman of the Arab Ministerial Council of Electricity (AMCE), started by shedding the light on the development of renewable energy in Egypt, and stressing on the ministry’s permanent pursuit to achieve the renewable energy targets of 2020.

Dr. Mohammed Al-Tuwaijri, Assistant Secretary-General for Economic Affairs for the Arab League also gave a speech about the Arab countries efforts in the field of sustainable energy as well as the League of Arab states continuous efforts and initiatives.

Additionally, Mr. Suleiman Al-Herbish, Director General of OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) presented in the history and development programs supported by the OFID. Furthermore, Ambassador Julius Georg, the German Ambassador in Cairo shared his views on the future of renewable energy in Egypt.

Finally, Dr. Hassan Younis, the former Egyptian Minister of Electricity praised the role of the Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE) in enabling the Arab countries to benefit from regional and international experiences. Dr. Younis also highlighted the need for new means of financing for renewable energy and energy efficiency projects.

During the ceremony, Mr. Suleiman Al-Herbish, Director-General of the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) was awarded the “Arab Knight for Sustainable Energy Medal” in recognition of his efforts in the field of sustainable energy and his support to interns in the Arab Program for Sustainable Energy Youth (APSEY). The award was presented by H.E. Dr Mohamed Shaker

As the head of a delegation from the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID), H.E. Mr.Suleiman Al-Herbish inaugurated the OFID meeting room at the Regional Center for Renewable Energy and  Energy Efficiency (RCREEE) headquarters on Tuesday, November 24.
